Mark passed away in the early hours of the morning at home in Fairplay, Colorado with family nearby. He is survived by his wife Rachael, Daughters Kami, Jessica, and Callie, grandchildren Gavin and Katlin, Mother Lauraine Edwards, brother and sister-in-law Paul and Joie Edwards, sister Pamula Tyler, nieces’ nephews, aunts, uncles, and cousins. Mark attended high school in Michigan. After leaving school he entered the Navy on January 30th 1978 and received an Honorable Discharge on July 21st, 1980. He moved to Nebraska and later settled in Colorado. He was kind with an easy sense of humor, a good friend and hard worker. He enjoyed spending time with his Family and golfing with the boys. He was involved with many fundraisers and was also a member of the Fairplay American Legion. He is sorely missed. A memorial will be held on May 25th at the Fairplay American Legion Post 172, 601 Clark Street Fairplay Colorado at 2:00 pm. Obituary: Carolyn Miller June 3, 1949 – May 7, 2024 Carolyn Marlene Miller (Clifford) of Breckenridge, Colorado passed away peacefully on May 7, 2024 after a two-year battle with kidney cancer. Carolyn was born in Dayton, Ohio where she would meet her high school sweetheart and future husband, Richard Miller, in German class at Fairmont West High School. Perhaps she can finally make sure he learns some German in the afterlife, as he was too smitten to pay attention after he met her. The most enduring characteristic of Carolyn was that she loved and cared about people. She received a Bachelor’s and Master’s Degree in Education from Miami University (Ohio) leading to a career as the crisis counselor at Centerville High School in Ohio. For her work, Carolyn received special recognition from the President at the White House. Carolyn and Richard married in 1971. In their early years of marriage, they fostered their son, Bobby – a relationship they enjoyed and maintained throughout their entire lives. Carolyn harbored a deep love for the outdoors – and enjoyed every day of her summers and eventual retirement in Breckenridge. She always said she never wanted to take looking out at the mountains for granted. Carolyn led day hikes, snowshoeing, and cross-country skiing at the Gold Run Nordic Center. She was the smiling face greeting visitors at the front desk of Breckenridge Recreation Center and loved her coworkers there – even garnering invitations to bachelorette nights and baby showers. She formed a remarkable community of friends in Breckenridge and never met a stranger. Carolyn volunteered with Advocates for Victims of Assault, taking overnight calls to be there when strangers needed a friend. In a lifetime of caring for others, Carolyn never boasted, preferring to humbly take on the work of loving well. In the final weeks of her life, friends and family traveled in from Ohio, Kentucky, Oregon, and Florida to be with her – a testament to her lifelong commitment to others. Carolyn is preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, Richard. She is survived by her sister, Connie Gebhart, her foster son, Bobby Robbins, and countless extended family, friends, and likely strangers who will miss her. A Celebration of Life Service will be held from 10am – 1pm on Saturday, June 8, 2024 at Carter Park Pavilion in Breckenridge, followed by brunch and socializing. Santillan was once a poor student. English was not his first language. He didn’t get good grades. That was before Santillan and three of his classmates defeated multiple colleges, including the famous Massachusetts Institute of Technology team, as high schoolers at an underwater robotics competition in 2004. Three of the four teen underdogs were brought to the country illegally by their families as children, including Santillan. They became the faces of a national movement to change immigration laws. Santillan’s parents brought him from Mexico to the United States when he was 9 months old. Like many in his situation, Santillan has lived almost his entire life in the United States of America and identifies himself as an American, but he doesn’t have the documents to affirm it. This is my country,” Santillan said. He grew up in Phoenix, Arizona, where he now operates his own food truck business. That’s why he was recruited to speak with a Summit High School culinary class. Santillan patiently answered students’ questions about his favorite dishes to cook, if he still works on robots, the upsides to owning a mobile restaurant, the permits and tasks required to run a food truck, and the definition of a limited liability company, commonly referred to as an LLC. He shared that his goal is to eventually earn a Michelin star. While meeting with a robotics class several periods later, Santillan explained to the students who asked why he didn’t pursue engineering.
